Journal: Giving Back

Giving More Than Just A Painting

When people think about artists supporting charitable organizations, donating artwork for an auction is probably one of the first things that comes to mind. And while that's certainly one way I've been fortunate enough to contribute, I've learned that giving back can take many forms.

One of my most memorable experiences was working with more than 40 students through Thompson. I spent time building frames, stretching canvases, and preparing materials so the students could have the opportunity to create their own artwork.

What made that experience special wasn't the finished paintings. It was watching the students experiment, make decisions, and discover what they could create.

As an abstract artist, I know firsthand how rewarding it can be to approach a blank canvas without knowing exactly where the process will lead. Seeing others experience that same freedom was a reminder of why I started painting in the first place.

There was no pressure to create something perfect. No concern about whether the artwork would sell or where it would eventually hang. It was simply about enjoying the process and expressing something personal.

And sometimes, that's worth more than any finished painting.
