I Don't Paint to Match Your Sofa

Why the best artwork doesn't complete a room—it inspires it.

It usually starts with the same question. "Can you make something that matches my sofa?"

Sometimes it's the sofa. Sometimes it's the rug. Sometimes it's the drapes, the kitchen island, or the accent pillows.

I understand why people ask.

For decades we've been taught that artwork is the final decorating decision. You finish the renovation. You choose the flooring. You install the lighting. You order the furniture. Then, when everything else has been decided, you begin looking for something to hang on the walls that ties it all together.

There's nothing inherently wrong with that approach.

It just isn't mine.

When someone asks me to paint something that matches a room, I often find myself asking a different question.

What if the room should be responding to the painting instead?

That idea surprises people.

But once they begin thinking about it, it changes the conversation entirely.

Decorating and Designing Are Not the Same Thing

One of the most interesting things I've learned is that decoration and design often get confused. Decoration is about coordination.

Design is about intention.

Decoration asks:

"What color should the artwork be?"

Design asks:

"How should this room make someone feel?"

Those are completely different questions.

A room can be perfectly coordinated and still feel lifeless. Everything can match. Nothing can clash. Every texture can complement every finish. Yet somehow the room feels as though it's waiting for permission to come alive.

I've walked through spaces exactly like that.

Beautiful.

Expensive.

Impeccably finished.

Completely forgettable.

Then I've walked into another home where one original painting changes everything. Not because it matches. Because it matters.

The Rooms That Stop You

Every once in a while, you enter a room that quietly asks you to stop. Nobody tells you to.

You simply do. Your eyes move toward one wall. Not because it's the brightest object in the room. Not because it's the largest. Because something about it creates gravity.

The painting doesn't dominate the space.

It anchors it.

Suddenly every chair feels intentional. The lighting makes more sense. The architecture becomes more noticeable. The room hasn't changed. Your experience of it has. That's what exceptional artwork does. It doesn't compete with great design.

It gives great design a center of gravity.

My Favorite Color Is Curiosity

People often assume artists are obsessed with color. I appreciate color. But I'm far more interested in curiosity. Curiosity keeps people engaged. Curiosity slows people down. Curiosity creates conversation. When I'm building a painting, I'm constantly asking myself questions.

What happens if I scrape this layer away?

What if resin flows here instead?

What if I intentionally leave evidence of the previous layer?

What happens if I stop trying to control everything?

Those questions are far more interesting to me than asking whether blue should become green. The painting grows because I'm curious. Not because I'm decorating.

Controlled Chaos

My studio is filled with materials that many people wouldn't expect to find in an artist's workspace such as wall plaster, fiberglass resin, industrial chemicals, WD-40, carburetor cleaner and solvents.

I view these materials are simply tools. They're part of an ongoing conversation between control and unpredictability. One layer reacts differently than expected. Another begins dissolving.

Texture appears where I wasn't expecting it. Movement emerges almost on its own. Those moments can't be manufactured. They're discovered. That's one reason I refuse to paint the same piece twice. Discovery disappears when everything becomes predictable.
